The Wagers by Sean Michaels

Luck is only on your side when you have a little in your pocket. This is the conceit of Michaels’ novel. It plays with betting odds, stand-up comedy and high stakes thievery in a way that dangles options and yet, forces you to think about the role chance plays in our lives. Michaels crafts delicate scenes of human frailty and balances them with rhythm and strength. I knew Michaels was special after reading Us Conductors, but now he’s done it again. A brilliant book. Highly recommended.
