The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead (15/52)

Whitehead finds the perfect blend between harsh reality and sweet imagination as he explores the despair associated with the underground railroad. Focusing on a single runaway slave, Cora, Whitehead shows the enduring presence of slavery on the psyche and suggests that freedom is illusory. The writing is taut and precise which provides easy access for the reader to feel uneasy at all times. This is an excellent book. Highly recommend.
