New Boy by Tracy Chavalier (10/52)

Tracing the story of Shakespeare’s Othello through the lens of sixth grade dating dynamics in the 70’s, Cavalier offers us a glimpse into the race, class, and social issues as interpreted by children. This novel has a snappy plot that attempts to create characters that are equally recognizable and original. The tone at times of the over-sexed children is at odds with their insistence on playing double-dutch, but is relatable to the single day dating lives of elementary school. It was a fine re-telling of Othello. Good book.
