Bear Town by Frederik Backman (3/52)

Brilliant! This novel about a hockey-mad town in rural Sweden is nostalgic and romantic, but equally horrified by the obsession and culture. Backman crafts an entire community of nuanced characters who struggle with the limitations and the opportunities, the expectations and the permissiveness.  By the end of the novel, Backman is specifically challenging us to identify our values and our hypocrisies. This is brilliant storytelling and captivated me immediately. It is a hockey book, but it is so much more. Highly recommended. Could this be the best book of 2018 for me already?
